One: Long ago the people were given a sign of God’s presence.
Many:  “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means “God with us.”
One: God’s promise to us remains sure and true:
God’s anointed Son will soon walk among us,
to lighten our darkness, to restore the joy of our salvation,
to save us from sin.
Many:  God—the God of all love—is with us.  Praise the Lord!

Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said: “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good.

              One: The Word of God for the people of God
Many: Thanks be to God!

Our Gospel Lesson comes from Matthew 2:1-6
In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet:
‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
    who is to shepherd my people Israel.’”
